Pass Plus

Pass Plus is a training course specifically aimed at new drivers, designed by the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) with the help of insurers and the driving instruction industry. Pass Plus will build upon your existing skills and knowledge, it will teach you how to anticipate, plan for and deal with all kinds of hazards, and can help you to become more confident on the roads

Pass Plus is made up of six practical modules which include:
  • driving in town
  • driving in all weathers
  • driving on rural roads
  • driving at night
  • driving on dual carriageways
  • driving on motorways
You can choose to complete the course in separate sessions which can vary in length and be conveniently arranged with your trainer.
You may prefer to complete Pass Plus via our popular one day course.
The one day course incorporates driving into the city of London experiencing a wide range of road and traffic situations. This opportunity allows new drivers to gain valuable experience and knowledge driving in a big city environment with varied and complex road systems. You will also develop skills in driving on various motorways including the M25. Of course you will also incorporate interesting and challenging rural routes as well as extensive dual-carriageway driving.
The one day course will be followed up with a night driving session where you will develop your skills at driving in the dark.
If you decide to do the day course lunch is included in the price.

Anyone who holds a full UK licence is eligible to take part in the scheme. You will not have to take a test at the end of the course but you will be continually assessed. You must successfully complete all the modules in the course to an achieved or exceeded standard.

How much does Pass Plus cost?

The cost of the course is £150. This is based on the minimum required 6 hours to successfully complete the course. If more sessions are required to complete the course they will be charged at £25 per hour. Please note that if the course is done on a week day then the London congestion charge will also be added to the cost (currently £8).

When you have successfully completed the course, you are advised to check available discounts offered by the insurance companies taking part in the scheme. The amount you save will depend on the company you choose, you may even save more than you paid for the course.

Refresher training

If you are looking for refresher lessons for whatever reason then Coastline can help.
Our patient friendly instructors can give you the confidence to get back behind the wheel. We will accommodate your needs and put you with a trainer/car that would suit you best. Your trainer would then give you an assessment and from there would devise a schedule of instruction.
It may be that you only need a couple of sessions, it may be that you need more, our trainers can advise and help you.
Please call head office on 01903 774929 or e-mail and soon you will back in the driving seat!
We also offer driving assessment courses and these are usually conducted over a half day session. These courses will usually start with a presentation, followed by an assessment drive and finishing with some coaching to help you improve your driving skills. We usually run these courses on a one to one basis at a cost of £85 per session. We can offer group sessions or two to one training, please contact us for more details.

We can offer the opportunity for skid-pan training. These are held on live skid pans using rear wheel drive cars rather than cradle cars. These courses are organised in partnership with The Association of Sussex Driving Instructors (ASDI) and are run by skid control at Goodwood. We usually organise groups of twelve clients to help keep the cost affordable at around £50 per person for a 3 hour session. These courses are run depending on demand. If you require any further information give us a call on 01903 774929 or e-mail us via the contact us page.  More details on the Skid Pan can be found HERE

Instructor Training

Why do you want to become an instructor?

Ø  As a driving instructor, you become your own boss.

Ø  You can choose when and where you work and enjoy the same flexibility whilst you are training using our carefully crafted course tailored to meet the needs of the individual trainee.

Ø  The actual number of instructors on the Driving Standards Agency (DSA) ADI register is virtually the same as it was 10 years ago. Therefore you’ll be joining a career that is all but redundancy proof if you run your business well.

Ø  You can train with our local friendly school. When you pass all three parts of the exam, you may wish to work with us or go independent – it’s your choice.

Ø  Running your own business brings freedom and independence.

Ø  Probably the most satisfying job on the world when that ‘difficult to teach pupil’ passes with flying colours - all because of you.

Are you driving instructor material?

Whilst your driving ability has to be of a high standard and you must take pride in your driving, a more important factor is your personality - you need to be of a tolerant nature, so when your pupil crunching through your gears that’s all part of the job. You will be working one to one with your pupils, so the ability to communicate and maintain a rapport is essential. A calm personality helps - nervous learners have to be handled with care. You should be able to display restraint and patience with other road users, particularly when they make mistakes. People without any formal academic qualifications can equally succeed in this career. If you’re from a teaching background, then all the better.

If this sounds like you, then a career in driving instruction is for you.

What are the legal requirements?

Not everyone can become a driving instructor. You must be able to satisfy minimum legal requirements so a quick visit to www.dsa.gov.uk to see if you qualify. Why not download Download 'Your guide to the approved driving instructor register' (PDF, 435K)  (www.direct.gov.uk/en/Motoring/Drivingforaliving). This tells you all about the test requirements and how to apply to enter the Driving Instructor Register.

What do you have to do to become a DSA approved Driving Instructor?

To become a fully qualified instructor you need to pass the three parts of the DSA qualifying examination. The exams are not particularly hard to pass provided you get the right training, advice and practice. Driving instruction is a practical skill rather than an academic discipline, which is probably why our driving school achieves good results.

What about the trainers?

Our main trainer has been a training instructor since 1999 and instructing pupils since 1991. Training will take place on a one to one basis thus enabling the training to be perfectly tailored to your needs (DSA allows the maximum two students to one trainer). Occasionally, you may wish to share some part 3 sessions with another trainee (shares the cost and you can learn from other trainees as well as your trainer). But its your choice - not ours. For each trainee employed, the driving school is required to employ the services of a fully qualified driving instructor on a 1 to 1 ratio. We strictly adhere to this law.

All of our trainers are highly trained and hold qualifications such as the Cardington Special Test at grade A, RoSPA Gold standard in advanced driving, IAM advanced motoring, ABC LEVEL 3 in Facilitated Learning, City & Guilds  PTLLS 7307 and accreditation on the DSA fleet training register. We are members of the Institute of Advanced Motorists, the Motor Schools Association, the Driving Instructors Association, the ADI Federation and the Association of Sussex Driving Instructors. All of our trainers have vast experience in teaching learners and advanced drivers, and are always happy to offer advice based on their own experiences.

How does the course work?

Training is normally undertaken on a part-time basis around your existing job or any other commitments you may have. We use home study materials with support from our trainers and in-car training to enable us to tailor the training to your individual needs. Therefore the training is as long or as short has it needs to be.

Theory can be learnt relatively quickly but skills take time and practice to evolve - so you will need time. We use a unique way of training you. Whilst learning the part 1 (theory), we will develop your driving skills (part 2) to the highest possible level to ensure that you understand what you will have to teach in part 3. The more you understand, the easier you will find part 3 and consequently you will qualify more quickly and confidently. We will also introduce some elements of part 3 at this early stage. We believe this is better, and consequently makes it an easier way to learn. Although waiting times for Part 1 are minimal, it can take between 6 to 10 weeks before you can take Part 2 or Part 3, and you cannot book the next exam until you have passed the previous one. So although you do not need months of actual training it will unfortunately take you several months to qualify because of these waiting times.

What will it cost?

Our thorough training will raise you to the advanced standard required. The cost of such training is typically around £2,500, which is a lot of money to find up front. So with you in mind, we charge on an hourly basis of £25. (Reference books, exam fees, licence fees etc. will have to be paid separately). Remember, the more work you put in, the quicker you learn - the less it will cost you. However you may wish to remember the minimum hours of training we suggest are: -

Ø  Part 1 - The theory and hazard perception test *

Ø  Part 2 - The Driving Test *

Ø  Part 3 - Instructional Ability…. 40 hours + 20 hours for a trainee licence

*  Parts 1 and 2 are combined and consist of 18 hours training.

Why is the word ‘you’ highlighted through out these pages?

It’s because you are important through out all the training and beyond.

You must do lots of work to pass the exams – they will not pass them selves.

You are doing something that helps enrich people’s lives and adds to their safety and security.

You get tremendous satisfaction when your pupil passes their driving test, (you’ll always remember that first pupil you taught who had never sat behind a wheel before who then passed first time - a brilliant experience for both them and you).

You will be come self-employed – the more effort you put into your business - the more profitable your business will be. You can work more hours - you can earn more money.

You can also open up other avenues of driver training that will involve dealing with experienced drivers and not just learners.

You are your own boss and can work when its suites.

You can start that process by contacting us for further information.
